Practical Magic for the Winter Solstice

The Winter Solstice is upon us, bringing with it the delicious darkness of internal healing and shadow work along with the corresponding lovely lightness of festivities and merriment. This period of deep introspection and reflection is an essential part of nourishing and understanding ourselves. It prepares us to let go of what no longer serves us and clears the way for the light of spring. Now is a good time to perform some simple practical magic to make the most of the energy at this pivotal point in the year.

Magical Winter Solstice Incense

Making your own incense is a great way to attune with the energy of the season while you perform rituals or meditation. The easiest way to create incense is to mix up loose ingredients and sprinkle them onto candles or burn them in a cauldron on a charcoal disc, however, you can adapt recipes to create cones or sticks by adding potassium nitrate or saltpetre if you prefer.

For this Magical Solstice Incense recipe, you will need:

2 parts Myrrh

2 parts Frankincense

2 parts Pine needles

1 part Mugwort

1 part Juniper berries

1 part Cinnamon

You can either measure the herbs out or use your intuition when adding each one. Place each herb into your mortar and pestle to grind them down. State your intent as you mix and blend the herbs, then place your hands over the ingredients and visualise your energy flowing into the mixture, charging it with your focused concentration. Once you have charged the blend, keep it in an airtight container and use as and when you perform Solstice spell work, rituals, or meditations.

Drawing Down the Sun Ritual

One of the most magical things about this annual festival of darkness and light is the welcoming back of the sun. After months of long, dark evenings, we can finally start looking forward to the return of the light, and with it our own renewed energy and vitality. The most important part of any celebration at this time of year is light, from the sun itself as well as the candles, bonfires, and fairy lights that we surround ourselves with during the winter.

For this ritual, it is best to work with daylight but if it is cloudy where you are, then light a fire and plenty of candles and envisage that they contain the sun’s glowing power. Begin by grounding yourself and then draw a large spiral on the ground, either with chalk or in the dirt or with rope.

Sit in the centre of the spiral, close your eyes and breathe deeply. Visualise the light from the sun or the fire flowing towards your body, gradually spreading from the tips of your toes to the top of your head. Imagine the golden light radiating out from you, surrounding you and the spiral.

Focus on things that you are grateful for. Concentrate on the good things that have happened this year and the blessings that you have been gifted with. Imagine yourself stepping into the new year filled with positivity and a renewed sense of purpose. When you are finished, visualise the light fading from your body and being absorbed into the earth.

Winter Solstice Crystal Meditation

Whether you are a meditation pro, or you are just starting to dip your toe into the calming waters of meditative stillness, being in meditation is one of the best ways to work with the dark energy of winter. It allows us to go deeper into ourselves, to connect with the energy around us, and to shine a light on new ways of thinking and understanding. Crystals are the perfect tool for deepening a meditative trance and effecting the desired outcome as their powerful vibrations amplify your intent.

For this Crystal Meditation, you will need one or two of the following:

A stone of fire and vitality, ideal for the Winter Solstice.

Black Onyx

A grounding stone, perfect for enabling a deeper connection with inner self.

Snowflake Obsidian

A reflection stone, ideal for helping you find a balance between the light and dark.

A stone of passion and prosperity, ruby is ideal for manifesting New Year intentions.

A stone of new beginnings, perfect for working with the turning of the seasons.

Sit quietly with your chosen crystal in your hand and close your eyes, bringing your attention to your breathing. Feel the weight of the stone in your hand, visualising your awareness gently spiralling down into it. As you breathe in, imagine that your lungs are filling with a white light that permeates out from your body, encasing you in a luminescent bubble. Visualise your intention and focus it into the stone, sitting with it for as long as you need. When you are ready to finish the meditation, imagine your awareness spiralling back out of the stone and into your body, grounding yourself to the earth. Gently open your eyes.

Solstice blessings!
